The Lord has some fairly singular ways of letting me know He loves me, or that He's heard me, or that He has something to say to me. These ways have evolved slowly, and I treasure them. They will continue to evolve -- they may be entirely different six years from now, or even next week, if He so chooses. He is constant and changeless, but He is not static.
Recently, though, it occurred to me that these may be more than just sweet, evolving patterns of communication. I began to wonder if they might also be His way of breaking through eternity, not only to uplift and challenge me in the relationship we have now, but to give me a message about the perfect sweetness that we will have together in eternity. Because you see, sometimes what He communicates to me goes beyond what I can grasp now. But the future me, the one who has spent sixty billion years face to face with Him, knows deep corners of His heart that I can't begin to imagine yet.
One of the most glorious things about our God is the fact that He can never be entirely contained -- not in time, not in space, not in understanding, not in anything. Yet He invites us to step intimately into His limitless being -- to begin to learn to dance with Him now in our humble, mortal state, and to continue this sublime dance forever and ever and ever. He asks us to come as we are, with our errors, our flaws, and our failures; those who try to dress themselves up for this dance have misunderstood, for it is He who must dress us. The only attire we are to put on is surrender.
