First thing yesterday morning, I happened to look down at my not-so-young-anymore feet. I remembered a dry but astute observation I'd read several years ago in a French novel, that toes get ugly as they age. This made me laugh.
I took a few steps downstairs, and suddenly this verse jumped into my mind:
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
(Isaiah 52:7, English Standard Version)
Perhaps because it was Easter Monday, it dawned on me that this verse could apply not only generally, to those who spread the news of the gospel, but to Jesus Himself. His beautiful feet were crucified on one of a group of hills often referred to as mountains. He did this so that He could bring good news, publish peace, bring good news of happiness, publish salvation, and say to Zion (and to all the world) "Your God reigns."
Then an even sweeter thought came to mind. What if one reason the Holy Spirit inspired this verse was to minister to Jesus, hundreds of years later as He would hang on the Cross?
Well, it's just a thought. But either way, His feet are indeed beautiful. Not only because of what they did for us on Calvary, but because of all the many ways His feet have led and served His people throughout history, and continue to do so.
Bless You, dear Lord Jesus, for Your beautiful feet -- swift and agile as hinds' feet, guiding us tenderly and firmly up the many mountains we set before You.
