It delights Him when we recognize how much He loves us and wants us! What a simple but often seemingly impossible gift to give to our sweet God in heaven. I'm much more prone to say, "I know I suck at [whatever]," "I don't know how You put up with me." I've even been known (I'd hate to confess how often) to tell Him He should give up on me. No! This is not what He wants to hear. Imagine Jesus saying these things to the Father! No -- He thrills to hear His love reverberated back to Him like an echo. Not only that, but as we echo these words of love back to Him, we begin to truly absorb the truth of His love for us. As we begin to believe it, we begin to act upon it. Love builds confidence, and God wants us to be entirely confident in His love.
I don't make New Year's resolutions, but this might be a good one. Begin believing He loves me. Begin truly believing that He loves me and wants me. Stop throwing Him bitter self-recriminations, as if they might somehow please Him. They don't. Humility pleases Him. Humility grows out of looking at Him and finding Him magnificent, and seeing our smallness by contrast. Self-recrimination comes from looking at ourselves, period.
Thank You, Father, for planting this song in my head to start the new year. Let this be for me a year of living in humble but ever-increasing, even outrageous certainty of Your profound love for me, as I keep my eyes on YOU rather than on myself. Let me honor and delight You by joyfully receiving Your love, not turning it away in false humility.
